Therapy for couples in North Carolina and South Carolina

Should my relationship really be this hard?

Everyone told you that marriage is hard, but you didn’t expect it to be this hard. Yes, you knew it would take work, but lately it seems like the two of you can’t agree on anything. It feels like you’re speaking a different language.

You’ve done individual therapy. Hell, maybe your partner has too! But you still feel disconnected. You wonder how to get back to how things were when you first met, first started dating. You know that realizing that you are autistic and/or has ADHD has changed things in some ways, but you’re not quite sure exactly how. And the more you’ve worked on unmasking, the harder it feels to connect. Like your partner just doesn’t understand you anymore.

Many of my clients come to me because they’ve done what they can on their own, but their relationship still feels full of struggles. They’re looking for a space where they can work together with their partner on how to communicate better, how to stop fighting so much, and how to rekindle the love they have for each other. They know that being autistic or ADHD plays a huge part in how they interact in their relationship and they realize they need someone else to help their partner understand how they see the world.

You’re ready to communicate better with your partner.

How couples therapy works

You can connect with your partner again.

My goal for couples is to help you have a space where you can focus on your relationship with each other. Yes, it’s important to honor both of your feelings and desires, but sometimes you can get so lost in the minutia of the fight that you forget to focus on the relationship. You need help reconnecting with each other, figuring out how to solve disagreements without it escalating to a fight. To understand how your different brains work and how to honor your needs as an individual while also honoring your relationship.

I truly enjoy helping people have a happy, healthy relationship with their partner. A lot of relationship and marriage advice out there is geared toward relationships where all partners are neurotypical, which is often not helpful for neurodivergent partners. That’s why it’s so important to find a counselor that understands the unique struggles and strengths that come with being an autistic or ADHD individual in a relationship with someone of a different neurotype. A lot of our work will be focused on helping you understand each other and ways to communicate where it doesn’t devolve into arguments. We always move at your pace, and know that there is no judgement. Having a mixed neurotype relationship can be difficult, but if you’re willing to put in the work, you can reconnect. It’s worth it.
